PROTECT TEETH WITH SEALANTS

When food and bacteria get impacted into the grooves of the chewing surface of the back molars, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to brush these areas enough to clean them properly.  The best way to prevent cavities from starting in these grooves is to seal them with a a protective plastic coating.  These protective coatings are called sealants.  Once these grooves are coated, bacteria, food, and plaque cannot get in.  It is an easy, simple procedure and it lasts for many years.

SECONDHAND SMOKE AND INCREASED CAVITIES

A recent study from Japan indicates a relationship between secondhand smoke and an increase of cavities in children.  The researchers wrote that, "Exposure to secondhand smoke at 4 months of age, which is experienced by half of all children of that age in Kobe City, Japan, is associated with an increased risk of caries in primary teeth..."  However, they were not able to find the actual mechanism on how this produced the increase.
